Jackals Name Dallas Rugby as Affiliate Club

December 17, 2020 By Alek Hernandez

Jackals Dallas Rugby Club Affiliates

Dallas Rugby is pleased to announce that it is now an Affiliate Club of the new Major League Rugby (“MLR”) team, the Jackals.

Dallas Rugby will play a key role in extending the performance pathway for domestic players aspiring to become professional rugby players. The Dallas Harlequins will also play a role as an affiliate club.

“We are extremely excited to partner with the Jackals to continue to make DFW one of the premier rugby destinations in the US,”

Filip Keuppens, Dallas Rugby’s Director of Rugby

Working with the affiliate clubs allows for the exploration of securing additional game time for the Jackals’ Development Players at the Division 1 level. The Jackals will also extend further support and development opportunities to Dallas Rugby’s players and coaches. As the Development Players develop their skills and as the need arises, they will have the opportunity to be called up to compete with the MLR squad.

The Jackals Development Program allows domestic-based rugby players to immerse themselves within our high performance program as they aspire to secure professional rugby contracts. Development Players will train regularly on and off the pitch with the professional players gaining valuable skills and experience.

Jackals Head Coach and Director of Rugby Allen Clarke said, “This affiliation is great news for the growth of rugby in the DFW area. It forges links from grassroots to the professional game for men’s, women’s, youth, and high school programs.” He continued, “I look forward to establishing quality relationships with both clubs and supporting one another in our common love of rugby and pursuit for success.”

“We are extremely excited to partner with the Jackals to continue to make DFW one of the premier rugby destinations in the US,” said Filip Keuppens, Dallas Rugby’s Director of Rugby.

Assistant GM and Attack Coach Elaine Vassie said, “At the core of the Jackals vision is enhancing the opportunities for US qualified players to advance within the game.”

Established in 1968, Dallas Rugby is the premier Division I rugby club in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and has had numerous players play at the professional level in recent history. Most recently, Kelly Kolberg was named as a Development Player for the Jackals. We are proud of all our players for their efforts and look forward to many others who will play at the professional level in the future.

Dallas Rugby COVID-19 Update

August 24, 2020 By Alek Hernandez

USA Rugby Return to Play Guidelines Stage 3 - Stage 5.

Currently (as of August 24, 2020), Texas is still in Stage 3 of USA Rugby’s Return to Play (“RTP”) Guidelines. Therefore, Dallas Rugby will continue to abide by the RTP Guidelines and will continue to re-assess training possibilities as things develop.

We anticipate that there will not be any league matches this fall.

The Texas Rugby Union / Red River Rugby Conference (“RRRC”) is making plans to have friendly tournaments in the fall in the event Texas is upgraded to Stage 5 of the RTP Guidelines. These tournaments will likely be city-wide tournaments only (i.e. a Dallas tournament for Dallas-area teams, Houston tournament for Houston-area teams, etc.).

While everything is contingent on COVID-19, we are currently planning for our men’s and women’s sides to begin official preseason training at the start of October.

The RRRC is currently making plans for league play to begin in mid-to-late January 2021. These plans will be re-assessed as that date gets closer, and other options will be explored if competitions cannot start in January 2021.

Although we will not be holding any official training sessions at this time, we encourage players to keep up with their fitness either on their own or in small groups while abiding by social distancing guidelines. Please join our Facebook group where players post about local physical conditioning opportunities.

We will continue to update everyone as we monitor developments with USA Rugby and TRU. If you have any questions or comments, please email general@dallasrugby.org.

USA Rugby COVID-19 Update

USA RUGBY SUSPENDS SANCTIONED COMPETITION DUE TO COVID-19 CONCERNS

March 24, 2020- DALLAS, TX

Due to ongoing concerns with COVID-19, USA Rugby has suspended sanctioned rugby competition and activities for the foreseeable future. You can read USA Rugby’s press release here.

As of March 24, 2020, all XV’s National Championships have been canceled for the 2020 season; 7s season is still under review.

The Texas Rugby Union (“TRU”) has also shared two (2) additional updates regarding USA Rugby’s suspension, which can be found at:

March 13, 2020 – USA Rugby Suspends Sanctioned Competition and Activities for 30 Days

March 16, 2020 – Clarity of Suspended Competition & Rugby Activities – COVID-19

In summary:
Participating in rugby activities of any variety are prohibited and ultimately irresponsible at this stage. Given the collective and contact nature of the sport, holding competition and/or training is at risk of possible spread of COVID-19. We ask all clubs, administrators and members to respect social responsibility and the instruction of health officials during this complicated time.

Accident & Liability Coverage: As a key value provided to USA Rugby members, it is vital that all understand accident and liability coverage will not be available during the suspension, regardless of claim. To clarify, this does not pertain only to potential cases of COVID-19. All liability claims will not be accepted for incidents occurring between March 13, 2020 and the official end of suspension. Accident and Liability coverage specifically states coverage applies “…with respect to events or other activities that are sanctioned, approved, or conducted by USA Rugby.”
